Nine teams for Summer in the South Warm Up

The Cape 31 Summer in the South Series kicked off this weekend, featuring nine Cape 31s on the start line in Table Bay. The Capes enjoyed five races over the course of two days. With two visiting teams, Tokoloshe and Stella Maris, along with the new addition Scorpio, joining the fleet, the sight of numerous Cape 31s racing beneath the iconic Table Mountain added to the excitement.

Saturday's races unfolded in the Eastern corner of Table Bay, presenting challenging conditions due to a transition zone of breeze. Despite the difficulties, Bjorn Geiger's MB claimed victory in the first race of the weekend. However, the unpredictable breeze led to the abandonment of race two. Nevertheless, the teams eagerly anticipated the next day of racing.

Sundays racing took place just outside the harbour in Granger Bay, offering fantastic spectator views from the shore. Ideal conditions with 15-18 knots of wind and sunshine characterised races 2 to 4, although the final race featured more unpredictable winds. Tokoloshe, TnT, and Stella Maris secured victories on day two. The race area also provided sightings of dolphins, seals, and the occasional penguin.

The travelling teams relished the superb conditions of flat water, great breeze, and sunshine. Onshore, camaraderie flourished as the teams gathered at the Royal Cape Yacht Club for drinks and pizzas, celebrating the first event of their 5-race series.

In the overall standings, Tokoloshe claimed the top prize, followed by TnT in second and MB finishing third. See full results here.

Looking ahead, the next regatta is set for this weekend 1st-3rd December—the Tip of Africa Regatta —with an expected turnout of 10 teams, promising yet another exciting weekend of racing.
